RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 7 Maths Chapter 4 Ex 4.6 – Overview

Division Of Rational Numbers

It can be defined as the number that comes up after swapping the denominator value with the numerator and the numerator with the denominator value for the particular set of rational numbers.

Steps To Divide Rational Numbers

  1. Find the reciprocal, for the divisor value.
  2. Solve the problem to find the particular resultant numerator and the denominator values by finding the product of the respective numerator values and the product of the respective denominator values.

Division: In the case, if x and y are the two different rational numbers where y ≠ 0, it will lead to the resultant value which itself will be the Rational Number when x is divided by the n, or it can be also be obtained by multiplying the value of x with the reciprocal of y’s value.

Here, whenever x is divided by y, we write x ÷ y. Hence, we can say that the x ÷ y = x × 1/y.

In this case, if a/b and c/d are the two rational numbers where c/d ≠ 0, then here we can write it in the format given below:

a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × (c/d)^ – 1 = a/b × d/c

Important Terms

  1. Dividend: The number that is to be divided.
  2. Divisor: The number that divides the dividend value.
  3. Quotient: The number that is the result of the division, that occurs whenever the divisor divides the dividend value.
  • If a/b is divided by c/d, then a/b is the dividend, c/d is the divisor, and a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c which is the quotient value.

Also, note that any number is divided by zero, 0 is not defined.
