Important Definition for RS Aggarwal Class 8 Maths Chapter 6 Ex 6.3 Solutions

  • Multiplication of Algebraic Expression

There are two simple rules in the multiplication of algebraic expression:

(i) The product of two factors with like signs is positive & the product of two factors with unlike signs is negative.

(ii) If x is a variable & m, n are positive integers, then (xᵐ × xⁿ) = xm+n

        Thus, (x³ × x⁵) = x⁸, (x⁶ + x⁴) = x6+4 = x10, etc.

  • Monomials

It is a variable, a number, or a product of a number & one or more variables. The only rules are that the variables should be increased to only positive integer powers (no square roots or 1/x’s accepted), & no plus or minus signs.

  • Multiplication of two Monomials

It means the product of their numerical coefficients & the product of their literal coefficients. When two monomials are multiplied, initially multiply the coefficients, & then multiply the variable terms.

As per the power of literal quantities, we can express, m2 = m × m & m3 = m × m × m. Here, m2 & m3 both are monomials. Thus, multiplication of m2 & m3 = m2 × m3

= (m × m) × (m × m × m)

= m × m × m × m × m

= m5
