The author, Shri Faniswar Nath Renu, in this story is giving a hard-hitting message that how we have forgotten our traditions and culture in the name of being ‘modern’. This story depicts how “Bharat” has been overshadowed by the new modern “India”.

The story is about a wrestler, Lutan Singh Pehelwan who became an orphan at the age of 9 and was married at the same time. He was raised by his mother-in-law, a lower caste person, and because of that villagers used to torture them. Due to this, he became a wrestler at a very young age to take revenge on the villagers. By the time he reached youth, he had developed a sturdy body and all of the villagers were scared of him.

Once Lutan Singh went to see the match of Chand Singh, who was given the title of “Sher ka Bachcha” since no one could stand him in front of him. The old king of that region wanted to appoint Chand Singh as part of his court membership. Lutan Singh challenged Chand Singh for a fight.

At first, he was being overpowered by Chand Singh and even the crowd was favouring him. Even then he got all the energy from the beats of the drum in the background. And because of that he got inspired and defeated Chand Singh. The old king got impressed by Lutan and appointed him as part of his court membership. He became an undefeated wrestling icon and stayed on the court for 15 years. He had 2 sons who became wrestlers like him. After the king’s demise, his son became the new king and changed wrestling with horse racing.

Even though Lutan’s sons died, he still gathered the courage and beat the drums for the villagers. One day the disease also took Lutan’s life so his disciples laid him stomach down on his pyre. It is so because Lutan has asked his disciples that no one has ever been able to defeat him and he never laid supine on the ground. So whenever he dies, he must be laid stomach down, not supine.
