## GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Syllabus 2022

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has released the GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus 2022 on its official website. It is advised that the aspirants follow and be updated on the GATE 2022 syllabus to score better. The GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus consists of mainly four sections. The aspirants and expected to follow the prescribed exam pattern to obtain and secure well in the GATE ME 2022.

GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus is as follows.

### Section 1: Engineering Mathematics

A section consisting of arithmetic questions, the main objective of engineering mathematics is to test the applicant’s ability to understand complex concepts of mathematics involved in engineering and their application in problems.

• Linear Algebra
• Calculus
• Differential equations
• Complex variables
• Probability and Statistics
• Numerical Methods

### Section 2: Applied Mechanics and Design

The branch is concerned with the application of the concepts of mechanics to complex situations. Observed closely, the branch explores the reaction of bodies or bodies under the action of external forces. Let’s look at Applied Mechanics and Design.

• Engineering Mechanics
• Mechanics of Materials
• Theory of Machines
• Vibrations
• Machine Design

### Section 3: Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Science

Archimedes noticed deviations in the mechanics of liquids and the forces working on them long before the term ‘engineering’ was coined. Following in the footsteps of Archimedes – Leonardo da Vinci, Issac Newton, and Bliss Pascal led the way in fluid mechanics with their tremendous inventions and impeccable theories.

• Fluid Mechanics
• Heat Transfer
• Thermodynamics
• Applications
• Turbomachinery

### Section 4: Materials, Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering

Looking at the nerve of mechanical engineering, is related to materials science The discovery and design of new elements, with emphasis on solids. Manufacturing Engineering deals with the complexities of manufacturing processes and other considerations Contains.

Industrial engineering relates to the work culture of the industries and Included a clear delineation of the management roles required for mechanical processes.

• Engineering Materials
• Casting, Forming, and Joining Processes
• Machining and Machine Tool Operations
• Metrology and Inspection
• Computer Integrated Manufacturing
• Production Planning and Control
• Inventory Control
• Operations Research

## GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Exam Pattern 2022

MCQs – 2 marks for each correct answer; 2/3 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.

## GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Mark Distribution

The mark distribution table helps the aspirants to determine and understand where he/she has to focus more on. This also helps the students to have a rough understanding of how the exam is going to be structured.

The mark distribution is as per the given table.

 Section 1 Mark 2 Mark No. Of Questions Engineering Mathematics 5 4 9 Engineering Mechanics 0 2 2 Strength of Materials 5 4 9 Design of Machine Elements 0 1 1 Theory of Machines 1 2 3 Vibrations 0 1 1 Fluid Mechanics 4 3 7 Thermal Science 5 4 9 Heat Transfer 1 1 2 Manufacturing Science 4 6 10 Industrial Engineering 0 2 2 Verbal Ability 3 2 5 Numerical Ability 2 3 5

## GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern: GATE ME Marking Scheme

• For 1 mark for the right answer, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
• For 2 marks for the right answer, 2/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong response.
• No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions
• No negative marking only for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

## GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern: GATE ME Cutoff Scores Analysis

The cutoff score varies based on how the question is going to be. Tougher the question paper going to be – the more relaxed the cutoff is going to be. The cutoff score varies for students based on their social categories.

The cutoff is as given in the box:

 YEAR General OBS SC/ST/PwD 2020 34 30.6 22.6 2019 34.1 30.7 22.7 2018 34.7 31.2 23.1 2017 32.87 29 21 2016 29.6 26.6 19.7

## GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Types of Questions

The GATE question paper consists of multiple choice and numerical answer type questions. The Multiple choice questions consist of 4 options, out of which the candidate is expected to choose the right answers. In Numerical type questions, the candidates must enter the numerical values as the answer.

Candidates must make use of the virtual keyboard provided to enter the answer. Here are the different types of questions the candidates are supposed to answer :

1. Recall– The question is based on the principle, proven facts, formulae, or laws of the mechanical engineering discipline. The candidates are expected to answer these questions from his/her memory or from a one-line computation.
2. Comprehension– This helps in estimating the candidate’s understanding of the concepts in mechanical engineering subjects. Candidates are expected to derive simple conclusions based on fundamental ideas.
3. Application– This section covers the questions where the candidates must apply their knowledge and skills through logical reasoning or by computations.
4. Analysis and Synthesis– This section deals to test the candidate’s ability to deal with data. The candidate is expected to solve and identify data that are independent of each other. The question comes in a linked format, meaning the 1st question is mandatory to answer the successor question.
5. Common Data Questions– Here multiple questions depend on a common data problem or passage. Multiple questions are formed based on the given input data. Each question carries 2 marks and independent questions can be derived separately.
6. Linked Answer Questions– This section consists of problem-solving where candidates are expected to solve a problem followed by 2 questions. Each question carries 2 marks and can be derived separately.
