General Aptitude GATE Civil Syllabus

  • Verbal Aptitude: It includes basic English grammar such as tenses, articles, adjectives, prepositions, & basic vocabulary such as words, idioms, & phrases in context Reading.  
  • Quantitative Aptitude: It includes data interpretation such as data graphs, 2- and 3-dimensional plots, maps, & tables Numerical computation & estimation such as ratios, percentages, powers, exponents and logarithms, permutations and combinations, & probability.   
  • Analytical Aptitude: It includes the topic logic such as deduction and induction, Numerical relations & reasoning  
  • Spatial Aptitude: It includes the transformation of shapes such as translation, rotation, scaling, & grouping Paper folding, cutting, & patterns in two & three dimensions.

Section 1 – Engineering Mathematics Syllabus

  • Linear Algebra: It includes matrix algebra, Systems of linear equations, & Eigenvalues.
  • Calculus: It includes functions of single variable, continuity & differentiability, Mean value theorems, local maxima and minima, Taylor series, Surface and Volume integrals.
  • Ordinary Differential Equation: It includes linear and non-linear equations, Euler-Cauchy equations, and initial & boundary value problems.
  • Partial Differential Equation: It includes Fourier series, separation of variables, solutions of the one-dimensional diffusion equation, first and second-order one-dimensional wave equation.
  • Probability and Statistics: It includes sampling theorems, conditional probability, Random Variables, & Linear regression.
  • Numerical Methods: It includes error analysis, Numerical solutions of linear and non-linear algebraic equations, Newton’s and Lagrange polynomials, Single and multi-step methods for first-order differential equations.

Section 2 – Structural Engineering:

  • Engineering Mechanics: It includes a system of forces, equilibrium equations, Friction, and its applications, Centre of mass.
  • Solid Mechanics: It includes bending moment and shear force in statically determinate beams, simple bending theory, uniform torsion, buckling of column, combined and direct bending stresses.
  • Structural Analysis: It includes statically determinate and indeterminate structures by force/energy methods, Displacement methods, & flexibility methods of structural analysis.
  • Construction Materials and Management: It includes mixed design, short-term & long-term properties, types of construction projects, Project planning, and network analysis-PERT and CPM, & Cost estimation.
  • Concrete Structures: It includes the design of beams, slabs, columns, bond, and development length.
  • Steel Structures: It includes working stress & Limit state design concepts, beam-column connections, plate girders and trusses, Concept of plastic analysis beams and frames.

Section 3 – Geotechnical Engineering: 

  • Soil Mechanics: It includes phase relationships, One-dimensional consolidation, time rate of consolidation, effective and total shear strength parameters.
  • Foundation Engineering: It includes standard penetration and cone penetration tests, Earth pressure theories, Bishop’s method, Settlement analysis in sands and clays, pile load test, pile under lateral loading, pile group efficiency.

Section 4 – Water Resources Engineering: 

  • Fluid Mechanics: It includes properties of fluids, fluid statics, continuity, momentum and energy equations, and their applications, the Concept of the boundary layer, and its growth.
  • Hydraulics: It includes Flow measurement in channels and pipes, Dimensional analysis and hydraulic similitude, Channel Hydraulics-Energy-depth relationships, specific energy, critical flow, gradually varied flow, and water surface profiles.
  • Irrigation: It includes types of irrigation systems & methods, Crop water requirements, Gravity Dams and Spillways, Design of weirs on permeable foundation.

Section 5 – Environmental Engineering: 

  • Water and Waste Water Quality and Treatment: It includes the basics of water quality standards, water quality index, Water requirement, Water distribution system, Drinking water treatment.
  • Air Pollution: It includes types of pollutants, their sources and impacts, air pollution control, air quality standards, Air Quality Index, and limits.
  • Municipal Solid Wastes: It includes characteristics, generation, collection, and transportation of solid wastes, engineered systems for solid waste management.

Section 6 – Transportation Engineering:

  • Transportation Infrastructure: It includes the geometric design of highways such as cross-sectional elements, sight distances, horizontal and vertical alignments.
  • The geometric design of railway Track such as Speed & Cant.
  • Concept of airport runway length, corrections & calculations, taxiway & exit taxiway design.
  • Highway Pavements: It includes highway materials-desirable properties and tests, Design factors for flexible and rigid pavements, Design of flexible and rigid pavement using IRC codes.
  • Traffic Engineering: It includes traffic studies on flow and speed, peak hour factor, fundamental relationships, Traffic signs, Signal design by Webster’s method, Types of intersections, & Highway capacity.

Section 7 – Geomatics Engineering:

  • Principles of surveying, Errors and their adjustment, Maps-scale, coordinate system, Distance and angle measurement-Leveling and trigonometric leveling, Horizontal and vertical curves.
  • Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing-Scale, flying height.

GATE 2021 Civil Engineering Exam Pattern

GATE is an online test that comprises a total of 65 questions & is classified into three segments. The candidates must go through GATE Exam Pattern before starting the preparation of the exam.  The candidates who are appearing for the GATE exam 2021 must answer the general aptitude section. Here are some important points regarding GATE 2021 Civil Engineering Exam Pattern:

  • GATE is conducted in online mode only i.e Computer-Based Test.
  • The question paper comprises 65 questions for a total of 100 marks.
  • The exam has two types of questions such as MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) & NAT (Numerical Answer Type).
  • There is negative marking for MCQs but not applicable for NAT.
  • 1/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer for 1 mark MCQs & 2/3 marks will be deducted for 2 marks MCQs.
  • GATE exam contains three sections as General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, & specific subject of the paper.
  • All disciplines in the GATE exam have three sections except for AR, CY, GG, EY, XL, PH, and MA.

  • There is no negative marking for NAT (Numerical Answer Type) Questions.
  • In Objective Type questions:
