LG bendable eBook display ready for mass production
Lighter, thinner and more robust
A bendable plastic E-Paper Display could be set to shakeup the eBook industry. LG Display’s plastic E-Paper Display (EPD) is as thin as the protection film found on a Smartphone, making it about a third slimmer than existing eBook displays and about half as light.
Perfect feature is that you can actually bend an EPD by up to 40 degrees from the centre of the screen – ideal for adjusting glare or for a more authentic book-like experience.
LG Display claims it can withstand repeated drop tests from up to 1.5 meters and is even scratch and break resistant, having (allegedly) survived a beating from a small urethane hammer.
The plastic E-Paper Display also helps to reduce eye fatigue, and the amount of electricity needed.
There’s no word on pricing yet, but the fact LG Display has talked up EPDs as being cheaper alternatives to current eBook displays bodes well. LG Display’s first EPD, a 6-inch (1024 x 768) display is expected to be rolled out this year.
