Linear Open-loop Systems: Response of First-Order Systems, Physical examples of
First-Order systems, Response of First-Order Systems in series, Second-Order
Systems, Transportation Lag.
Linear Closed-Loop Systems: The control system, Controllers and Final Control
elements, Block diagram of a Chemical- Reactor Control system. Closed-Loop
transfer functions, Stability, Root Locus.
Frequency Response: Introduction to frequency response. Control system design by
Process Applications: Cascade control. Feed forward control, Ratio control, Selective
Controllers, Split Range Controller, Controller tuning, Control valves.
Applications of controllers in Bioprocesses: Bioreactor operation, measurement and
control: Aseptic operations, Biochemical process variables (pH, dissolved oxygen,
viscosity, temperature, NADH), measurement and control of agitation rate, foam
control. Data acquisitions, analysis and computer control of bioreactors.
