I. (a) Draw a neat dimensional sketch of a Broad Gauge track in cutting and show all component parts.

b) What are the requirements of an ideal permanent way? On what factors the capacity of a permanent way depends? Give your justification for unigauge policy.

c)  With neat sketches, explain the terms – Coning of wheels and Adzing of sleepers.

II. a) (i) Define super elevation. What are the factors affecting super elevation?

(ii) Determine the super elevation to be provided for a 4° transition curve having a maximum speed of 100 kmph for a B.G. track.

b) (i) With sketches explain the different types of rail joints.

(ii) Explain how the length of transition curve is determined.

 

III a) How do you classify railway yards? Describe their main features.

b) Explain with sketches the acute angle crossing and obtuse angle crossing.

c)  Discuss the factors to be considered in selecting a proper site for a railway station.
