NEET Result 2026 Tie-Breaker Criteria

Have you ever wondered what happens when 2 or more students get the same marks in the NEET Exam 2026? In such a case, the inter-se merit is considered as per the following conditions:

• Firstly Biology marks are considered. The candidate getting higher marks is preferred in the merit list.
• If there is still a tie, then the chemistry mark is considered.
• If it still remains a tie, then the student who has committed fewer mistakes is considered.
• Lastly, the age of the candidate is taken into account. The older candidate is given higher priority compared to the younger one.

This tie-breaking system ensures fair ranking when multiple candidates score identical marks. Since Biology carries 50% weightage in NEET (90 out of 180 questions), it makes sense that Biology performance is the first tie-breaker criterion.

Calculation of NEET Percentile

NEET Result 2026 Validity

Well, according to the announcement made by the Medical Council of India (MCI), the NEET Scorecard is valid for 3 years from the date of declaration of the result. For candidates who wish to study medicine abroad, then this is good news as the NEET Results will be valid for 3 years.

This means your NEET 2026 result will be valid until 2029. However, for Indian medical colleges, you typically need to secure admission in the same year or take a gap year and apply in the next counseling session. The 3-year validity is particularly beneficial for students planning to pursue medical education overseas.

NEET 2026 Merit List and Counseling

The NTA announces two types of merit lists which are explained below.

1. The first type of merit list is for counseling under 15% All India Quota. The names of all the candidates who had opted for this quota will be sent to the Directorate General of Health Services (Medical Examination Cell), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Only after this, the candidate will be allocated a seat after the online counseling round.

2. The second type of merit list is for the candidates who didn’t opt for the above Quota. NTA will send the AIR to DGHS, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Further, the admission committees will look into sending applications for counseling to all the selected candidates.

Later, these committees based on the counseling round will release a separate merit list based on which finally medical seats will be allotted.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counseling for All India Quota seats, while state counseling committees handle state quota seats. It’s important to participate in both counseling processes to maximize your chances of getting a medical seat.
