Preface The present work is a revised version of my Ph.D. thesis which was submitted under the supervision of Prof. S.A. Shaida in the D eapartm ent of H umanities and Social Sciences at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in the year of 1979. This work is in the area of meta-ethics. The methodology of the entire work is that of conceptual analysis and not of historical. I have tried to analyse throughout the concept of moral principle to dig out its basic nature in the light of contemporary debate. In this work I have stuck to my original position which I had held during my research work except few changes and addition here and there although none of which can be called substantial. I take this opportunity to express my deep sense of gratitude to Prof.S.A. Shaida for his invaluable guidance and en co urag em ent throughout the investigation. His c o n tr ib u t io n to the d e v e lo p m e n t o f m y a n a ly tic a l capabilities has been most valuable. I also wish to express my sincere thanks to Prof. R ajen dra Prasad, Prof. M ah ajan , Prof. M rs. M ohini Mullick, Prof. R.S. Misra and Prof. K.N. Sharma who have trained me well while I was doing my course work.
