PREFACE The science of Genetics has witnessed unprecedented growth in development within a century from rediscovery of Mendel s Laws in year 1900. Within span of 110 years, it developed in to most widely researched science.This stage has been attained through contribution of thousands of scientists out of which 52 scientists have shared most coveted 21 Nobel Prizes till this date. Over the period of time, Genetics developed large many braches i.e. Mendelian Genetics, Population Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, Cytogenetics, DevelopmentalGenetics, Pharmcogenetics, Oncogenetics, Epigenetics, Molecular Genetics etc. However, all these branches basically depend on simple mendelian principles and basics of structure of nucleic acids. With passage of time, complexity of genetic studies have increased tremendously from application of simple mathematic ratios in early decades of 20thcentury through analysis variance, simple electrophoresis for genome study to use of most complex chemistry,fast processing computers supported by hoards of complex software programs.The deciphering of nucleic acid sequences begun with simple laboratory procedures developed by Fred Sanger and Maxim Gilbert in 1970 s, which was extended in to development of automated capillary sequencer churning out information on arrangement of hundreds of bases per hour. This was still too slow speed in view of size of human genomes and of large many species of animals and plants.The most significant development followed was of Next Generation Sequencing Platforms inlate part of first decade of 21stcentury, generating sequence information on millions of bases per day. This not only broughttremendous speed in Genome Analysis, but also to the development of Transcriptomics, Metagenomics, Pharmacogenomics, Metatranscriptomics, Oncogenetics etc. Recognising the importance of Next Generation Sequencing Platforms in Genome analysis of animals and plants, Department of Animal Biotechnology,has made noteworthy contribution in this fast emerging area in last couple of years, has made humble efforts of compiling excellent information on
various aspects of functioning and applications of Next Generation Sequencing platforms for Genome Analysis of Animals and Plants. The book will certainly benefit Geneticists, Animal and Plant Breeders and young students of Genetics, Animal Breeding, Plant Breeding and Biology.
