PREFACE The significance of plantation crops, spices, aromatic and medicinal plants have been well known since time immemorial in India. Plantation crops are a large group o f the crops having industrial importance. These crops are grown in about 2 per cent o f the total cropped area 38.20 lakh ha of the country which contribute about Rs 7500 crores to export earnings. Among the various plantation crops coconut, arecanut, oil palm, cashewnut, tea, coffee, rubber are major crops, while cocoa and betelvine are known to be minor plantation crops. The cultivation o f these crops are confined to the small holdings and total coverage under these crops are compara tively less. Even than the cultivation of these crop is very important for export as well as domestic market. Besides, promotion of these crops helps in poverty-allevation particularly in rural areas by providing employment opportiunty to rural people. India, being the Land of Spices, is also the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices and spice products in the world. The varied agro-clim atic zones-tropical, sub-tropical and temperate are uitc conducive for cultivation of different types of spices in the country. Out of 109 spices recognized by ISO, 63 are grown in India. Spices contribute about 8.5 per cent o f India s export earnings from agricultural and allied products and 1.24 per cent o f the total export earnings. India s share in the world spices market is estimated as 46 per cent by volume and 27 per cent by value. The importance and uses o f medicinal and aromatic plants have been known since the creation of the universe and India is qonsidered to be endowed with rich herbal wealth distributed in its vast and diverse agro-clim atic regions. Medicinal and aromatic plants have been used by mankind from time immemorial for health, food, fragrance, cosmetics, etc. About 2000 native plant species are curative and 1300 are known for their aroma and flavour. Among the different systems o f medicines viz., A yurveda, Unani and Siddha are gaining much interest in the country and
world wide. The international market of medicinal plant is over US 60 billion per year, which is growing at the rate of seven per cent. The world essential oil production at raw material level in estimated at around US 90 crores annually. With global change from synthetics to naturals, the demand for medicinal and aromatic plants is increasing constantly even in the domestic market. But the indiscrimate exploitation o f our herbal wealth, which once constituted over 7000 types has resulted in their diminishing availability. Looking to the importance and utility of plantation crops, spices, aromatic and medicinal plants, an attempt has been made to organize this book in such a way that it will be useful for not only the undergraduate students o f Agriculture as well as Horticulture but also for those who are involved in the production and promotion o f these crops.
