About this eBook

PREFACE Water, a dynamic component of ecosystem, is a limiting factor for crop production. The availability of water in sufficient quantity and acceptable quality determines the sustainable performance of diverse crops. Rain is the primary source of water, a portion of which runs off and the remaining temporarily stored in the soil is also lost through deep percolation and evaporation, without producing economic benefits on the land where it falls. The challenge of growing water scarcity is becoming increasingly serious due to wasteful use of existing water resources. Though there is a considerable scope for increasing area under irrigation, the prohibitive cost of irrigation development and its environmental consequences are seriously limiting the extension of irrigation. Moreover, in future, agriculture will face serious competition from industry and other uses of water. Water management, therefore, is key to the sustainable production in both irrigated as well as rainfed areas. Realising the importance of the subject, the book summarizes the available information on various aspects. In writing the book, the works of authors quoted and materials of individuals and organisation incorporated are gratefully acknowledged. The author is deeply indebted to them. It is hoped that this compilation will be useful for students, research and extension workers and planners. In addition, this book will also be a valuable reference for candidates appearing in the competitive examinations. Grateful thanks are due to my wife Kiran for her contribution and sacrifices made during the writing of this book. The support and encouragement provided by my sons Rajnish and Manish are affectionately appreciated. V. C. SRIVASTAVA Ranchi, 2012
