Preface Engineering Mechanics is a course taught in the first year of B.Tech curriculum and in this subject the students need to develop capability to view an actual problem into an engineering problem and find the solutions using laws of mechanics. An engineering mechanics problem involving forces, may be solved easily, if the free body diagram is drawn correctly. Hence emphasis has been given for drawing neat and clean free body diagrams. With the emphasis on formulating practical problem and applying equations of mechanics, the attempts have been made to prepare the students to solve the problems of Engineering Mechanics. The object of this book is to present the subject matter in a most concise, compact, to the point and lucid manner. To make it more useful, the book had been written in an easy style. Care has been taken to arrange the subject-matter from simple to complex and known to unknown. A large number 200 of solved examples have been given. At the end of each chapter, few exercises have been added for solving them independently by the learners. The major goal in this undertaking is to offer an Engineering Text book that is read by students with interest and enthusiasm. The matter is introduced at the level that average student can follow comfortably. Infact the matter is self instructive and it speaks to the students. The book covers the topics on Two Dimensional Force Systems, Friction, Structure, Centroid and Moment of Inertia, Kinematics and Kinetics of Particles, Kinematics and Kinetics of Rigid Bodies, Virtual Work and Lab Practicals. The subject-matter has been developed from the point of view of Engineering students. Having had an overall view of the subject-matter together with the foundational concepts, in Chapter 1, the students should start thinking in terms of idealizations of bodies and application of the laws to set up the equations governing their behavior under different conditions.
