STRONG AGRO BASED ECONOM Y demands greater efficiency in production systems, the avoidance of losses through improvement in agro processing, en hanced nutritional quality and safety of processed products. In this context, there is much to be gained through biotechnological strategies in the coming years. The potential for this new coherence provided us the impetus to bring together eminent professionals from industries, institutions, government non-government bodies to take stock of the technological advancements in this area during a Conference on Biotechnological Strategies for Agroprocessing organized by Punjab State Council for Science Technology PSCST in the year 2000. Subsequently, it was pleasing to be able to persuade some of these experts to share their vision experiences in the form of chapters in their respective areas of expertise and create a valuable collection of related, dependent and interwoven text that is expected to cater to the needs of the current and future workers in this upcoming area to help raise the competitive edge of agro-biotech sector. Our effort was to present comprehensive account of the technical information on the various facets of biotechnology relevant to agroprocessing viz. crop im provement, crop production protection aspects, agro industrial products based on cereals, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, etc. as well as financial information technology back up for entrepreneurship development in Section-I of this volume in sufficient detail to enable the non-specialist reader also to understand. Hence, clearly we are responsible for any distortion or misrepresentations from these sim plifications, although we hope that none has occurred. The second section of this compilation brings out the research findings in these areas in order to provide base line data and research leads to the bench workers. The References Further Reading sections also contain other sources that we used in general way, which might, if consulted, bring the reader closer to a particular subject. While all possible efforts were made to reach uniformity in presentation, the results and expressed ideas, however, remain the sole responsibility of respective authors. The delay in bring ing out this volume is regretted, though, care has been taken to update the informa tion covered, for which, the support of contributors is gratefully acknowledged.
