PREFACE The forestry in arid areas involves a number of inputs, which are related to technical and social disciplines. The forestry in arid areas is quite different from general tree establishment technology. It requires knowledge of a large number of topics. Keeping this is view, this book is written with the primary objective to present the kind of information required to understand and integrate the technical, bio-physical and socio-economic components of tree establishment in arid areas for fuelwood and other applications. To achieve these objectives, this book has been written to furnish three tier informations. Firstly to give basic knowledge of important disciplines and management practice involved in the forestry programmes for arid areas. Secondly to impart knowledge related to forestry development activities appropriate to specific situations and thirdly practical knowledge about the engineer ing components of harvesting, efficient utilisation and socio-economic aspects of forestry related development projects. Initial presentation of this book deals with an orientation to the characteristics of arid areas and role of forestry in sustainable development of arid areas. Following this orientation, this book presents systematic description of site selection, site preparation, nursery practices procurement and storage of seeds, environmental protection and general establishment techniques for tree and shrubs and other desired amenities. Social and sometimes unique forest management practices, adopted on arid areas including agroforestry, fuelwood management, water shed management, role of wind break and shelter belt planting, vegetative soil erosion measures suitable for arid areas are discussed. The importance of agroforestry in the sustainable development of arid areas, establishment of tree, shrubs of other types of vegetative cover as a measure to control erosion, considering both water and wind
erosion and management practices suitable for watershed and other forestry related amenities are described in great details. Information on engineering tools required for different operations of forestry in arid areas such as site preparation, nursery raising, planting techniques and harvesting of fuelwood etc is also presented in this book. Following this, forestry inventory techniques, socio-economic consideration of forestry in arid areas become the focus of the book. One of the attraction of this book is detailed informations on planning of forestry programmes in arid regions and information on different aspects which have direct as well as indirect bearing on forestry related programme especially for arid and semi arid regions. Much of the information presented in this book is basic to acquire an understanding of the management and engineering tools responsible for forestry related programmes for the arid areas. The authors express their sincere thanks to their family members and colleagues for their continuous inspiration and suggestions without which this publication would have not been possible.
