Dr. Lalji Singh Born 5 July, 1947 Scientist Lalji Singh is an Indian Scientist who has worked in the eld of DNA ngerprinting technology in India, where he is popularly known as the "Father of Indian DNA ngerprinting". Singh has also worked in the areas of molecular basis of sex determination, Wildlife conservation forensics and evolution and migration of humans. In 2004, he received the Padma Shri in recognition of his contribution to Indian Science and technology.
On 22 August 2009, Singh was appointed as the 25th Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India. During his three-year tenure as vice chancellor at BHU, Singh took 1 as a token salary from the university. Until 1998, India didn t have an adequate facility for the diagnosis of genetic disorders, prevalent in the country. The fundamental research carried out by Dr. Singh and his colleagues in that area, led to the conceptualization and establishment of the rst DNA Based diagnostic laboratory in the country.
