Preface Indian agriculture is the largest private sector enterprise covering about hundred million farmers, contributes about 27 per cent of country's GDP and provides food lo one billion people. In order to educate, inform, train and motivate the farmers about scientific and technological advancements there is a huge army of over two lakh extension functionaries, spread through the length and breadth of the country. A large percentage of these are with State and Central departments in the Ministry of Agriculture, lev',1 in extension departmenls divisions directorates of Slate Agriculture University SAUs ICAR institutes and a small percentage work in NGO's and private sector. These extension professionals who work at various levels from grass root to lop managerial level need to update their know ledge and skills, develop new attitudes and value system, innovate and adopt new methods to perform their jobs with efficiency and efficacy. Training is a major component of HRD in adynamic organisation as achievement of programme goals depends upon effectiveness of workers and their Human Resource Development. It is an important component of improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the extension services. However, to cater to the training requirements of these extension personnel is a gigantic task. It is recommended that an employee should be trained on a regular basis for at least once for four w'eeks in every 3-5 years. The National Institute of Agriculture Extension Management. Hyderabad has been established to cater lo training needs in extension management. There are four regional Extension Education Institutes to provide training in communication technology and extension methodol ogy, fifteen Centres of Excellence have been established at ICAR SAUs and other Central Institutes for organising training in specialised subject areas. Further. SAUs. Gram Sew ak Training Centres. Extension Training Centres and Farmers Training Centres also provide training to middle and grass root level extension functionaries and farmers. World Bank assisted HRD project generally caters lo the training requirements of teachers, researchers and extensionists working in the SAU and ICAR system.
