PREFACE W ith the massive food production efforts worldwide amid rapid population growth and limited natural resource base, farmlands have continued to bear the burdon of destructive and toxic chemical agricultural inputs. Toxic farming methods have led to a decline in agricultural productivity. Although the odds seems to show an irreversible trend, the upsurge of environmental awareness has sparked the drive to curb the problems and bring back the health of agricultural ecosystems. One such solution is waste recycling and in terms of biodegradable wastes, composting. Its prospects are as good as it is a natural process of decomposing and recycling organic materials. Among the materials that can be composted are food wastes, leaves, grass clippings, plant trimmings, straw, shredded paper, animal manure, and municipal solid wastes. Like other recycling efforts, composting has many benefits not only to agriculture, but also to the environment, the economy and the society. Though various text books on soil science and soil microbiology deal with the subject of composting, it is feared that they do not adequately meet the needs of the students of agricultural science. However, there are a few books on compost which are no doubt good, but they highlight some of the methods of composting and the principles underlying them. Therefore the necessity has arisen to present in a concise form the subject of composting right from scratch so that the students may appreciate and assimilate the principle underlying them against the background of research finding. It is therefore hoped that research workers in the field of agronomy, soil science, soil microbiology executives, planners, administrators and environment and other related discipline will welcome this book. The agricultural extension workers will also find the information packed in this book useful because they can suggest to the farmers the right method of composting farm wastes conserving cattle urine and cattle dung in a scientific manner. Likewise, the local bodies in various states will find the information on composting useful. Though chemical fertilizers no doubt pay rich dividends to the farmer, integrated nutrient supply systems embracing organic manures, biofertilisers, green manures and chemical fertilizers are of late being advocated. In fact the hygienic utilization of wastes of towns and cities, and those of villages will reduce the fertilizer bill of
the farmer to a great extent, besides ensuring environmental cleaning up. This book explores everything about composting, particularly on how it is done, and the physical chemical, and biological changes inherent in the process. The process is tedious in as much as it is exacting.
