J nos Pauk, DSc, is head of Department of Biotechnology in Cereal Research Non-Profit Limited Company, Szeged, Hungary. He graduated as an irrigation and melioration engineer, than a biology teacher and later as an agronomist. He served the Hungarian Plant Gene Bank Institution at Tapioszele for a decade whichh formed the basis for his plant breeding interest. He integrated biotechnology methods into plant science. His staff in Szeged released the first doubled haploid wheat variety GK D lib b in 1992, in Hungary, which was followed by other released and patented winter wheat genotypes. In cooperation with rice breeders, they also released three varieties Risabell, Janka, Abel using different tissue culture techniques like haploid method, selection of somatic tissues, embryo culture. Also, their androgenesis method is successfully used to produce DH parental lines for creation of hybrids in papper. The genetic transformation as a research method is frequently used in their different research projects.His main research interests are the abiotic stress tolerance in cereals and its genetic background. Candidate genes in abiotic stress tolerance were transferred in cereals to study the effect phenotype of the genes. He is the chief editor of Cereal Research Communications, a well-known 40 years old international quarterly journal in cereal science. He organized the 1st International Congress of Cereal Biotechnology and Breeding in Szeged. As a Professor he is teaching Cereal Biotechnology and Breeding at Szent Istv n University, G d ll , Hungary to BSc, Msc and PhD. students. E Mail janos.pauk Wolfgang Merbach, obtained PhD Dr. agr. in 1970 at the University Jena and university lecturing qualification Facultas docendi, habilitation in 1982 at the Martin-Luther-University Halle -Wittenberg MLU . He has been head of the isotope laboratory at the Research Centre for Soil Fertility M ncheberg leader of the workgroup Ecological Change and enfranchised member of the central Round Table of the GDR in Berlin during 1989 90. He became Professor of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1990, and later as institute leader and deputy director at the Centre of Agricultural Side and Land Use Research ZALF M ncheberg . He also joined as Professor of Plant Physiology and Nutrition and Dean of the Agricultural Faculty of the MLU,Halle . His main lectures and teachings in various fields include plant nutrition and fertilization, ecological toxicology and soil science at the universities of Halle, Jena, Potsdam Cottbus, Z rich, Wien and Hisar India . His research focus has been on the aspects of symbiotic N2 fixation, ecophysiology and substance turnover in the rhizosphere, laughing gas emissions
