In these cases, the value of \u2018x\u2019 converts in terms of \u2018y\u2019, or if the value of \u2018y\u2019 changes, the value of \u2018x\u2019 also gets converted. The change in both values is identified with a constant of proportionality.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Direct Proportion<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two quantities a &amp; b are known to be in direct proportion if they increase or decrease together. The ratio of their corresponding values remains constant i.e a\/ b = k<\/p>\n<p>Where k is a positive number, then the quantities a &amp; b are known to vary directly.<\/p>\n<p>In such a case if the values b<sub>1<\/sub>, b<sub>2<\/sub> of b corresponding to the values a<sub>1<\/sub>, a<sub>2<\/sub> of a respectively then it becomes a<sub>1<\/sub>\/\/b<sub>1<\/sub> = a<sub>2<\/sub> \/b<sub>2<\/sub><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inverse Proportion <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two quantities a &amp; b are known to be in inverse proportion if an increase in quantity a, there will be a decrease in the quantity b, &amp; vice-versa. The product of their corresponding values should remain constant i.e if ab = k, then a &amp; b are said to vary inversely.
