Note that suggest, recommend, and propose may also be followed by a gerund in order to eliminate the indirect object (the receiver of the suggestion) and thus make the suggestion more polite. The most common verb used to report statements is telling.<\/p>\n<p>As a general rule, the changes in the tense of the reported speech depend upon the tense of the reporting verb in the direct speech.
