Poem The Trees deals with a voice that comes along with a body and it is engaged in the activities and interpreting various things that are not organic to the conventions of a nature poem. This is a different kind of poem that concentrates on the struggle of a population of trees.

The poem talks about the desperation of the trees who are trying to escape the confined surrounding of a greenhouse. The poem has a symbolic meaning. The trees cannot escape even if they want to and here the poetess is looking at the trees from a different angle. The poet tries to highlight the point in a language that is totally inappropriate just like the greenhouse. The poetess is trying to understand the things which the trees go through and she wants to paint a picture of the trees on that basis. She thinks that she can present these things through her writing.

The speaker who is trying to establish a connection with the audience here is also a part of the crowd. The poetess can hear voices and the audience of the poem is forced to follow different commands. The speaker wants to bridge the gap between the poem and the audience. The poetess believes that is the best way to express her thoughts.

Poetess wants to throw light on the things which the trees are experiencing. She sees it from a different perspective. In the poem, the trees are nothing but the house of the poet. Their roots are trying hard to separate themselves from the cracks of the floor in the veranda. The leaves are also progressing towards the glass. The poetess hears the breaking of a glass and the trees are trying to set themselves free. The moon which works like a mirror is breaking into pieces as the shadow of the oak tree is dividing the moon into many fragments.

The speaker’s head is full of whispers and she thinks that she might not have to hear those sounds again.

The poetess sees the trees as newly discharged patients. The poet tries to make a comparison between the long branches which are moving under the roof with the newly discharged patients from the hospital. A newly discharged patient becomes crazy when he is allowed to leave the hospital after recovering from a disease and the trees are also behaving like that. The branches are making progress under the roof and they want to go a forest where they will be free.

You can Download NCERT Books and solutions for CBSE Class 10 English First Flight Chapter 8 The Trees.

NCERT Solutions for 10th English First Flight Chapter 8 The Trees

Download CBSE Class 10 English First Flight Chapter 8 The Trees PDF

Important Word Meanings from the CBSE Class 10 English First Flight Chapter 8 The Trees – Poem

Here you can check the word meaning for CBSE Class 10 English First Flight Chapter 8 The Trees – Poem

Empty – vacant, hollow, missing

Bury – cover something so that it is not visible

Disengage – get free

Veranda – the space right outside the house but attached to it

Strain – make a lot of effort

Twigs – the topmost part of branches

Stiff – hard

Exertion – pressure

Cramped – shrunk

Boughs – larger branches of a tree

Shuffling – slow dragging motion without lifting feet

Half-dazed – half shocked/or half asleep

Scarcely – hardly

Departure – leaving

Lichen – crusty patches on tree trunks

Whishpers – low hushing voices

Silent – quite

Stumbling – walk unsteadily

Rush – hurry

Flash – shine

Oak – The name of a tree

We have covered CBSE Class 10 English First Flight Chapter 8 The Trees – Poem Summary.
