{"id":5448,"date":"2013-01-29T12:46:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-29T07:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kopykitab.com\/blog\/?p=5448"},"modified":"2021-08-18T11:44:15","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T06:14:15","slug":"new-android-ebook-readers-on-their-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kopykitab.com\/blog\/new-android-ebook-readers-on-their-way\/","title":{"rendered":"New Android eBook Readers on their way!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">New Android eBook<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Readers on their way!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s perhaps not the best timing, considering the\u00a0debut of new Kindles from Amazon, but competitor Kobo has a trio of\u00a0<span style=\"color: blue;\"><span class=\"kLink\">ebook<\/span><\/span>\u00a0readers on their way \u2013 including the Arc, its first Android-powered \u2018multimedia tablet\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Kobo Arc will of course go head to head against Amazon\u2019s second-gen Kindle Fire, which like the Arc sports a colour touchscreen and is powered by Google\u2019s Android 4.0 operating system.<\/p>\n<p>Slated to go on sale here in November, the Kobo Arc will be available in 16GB ($250), 32GB ($300) and 64GB ($350) versions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ulf83422c461\" class=\"gallery-single\"><img title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ausbt.com.au\/photos\/view\/maxsize:467,492\/504e42046c50436188b70c45767f2254-kobo-arc-1500.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"&lt;div class=&quot;photo-text text&quot;&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\"><\/div>\n<p>The Arc runs a custom-developed \u2018Tapestries\u2019 interface which Kobo claims uses \u201can intelligent cross-media recommendations engine to respond to the user\u2019s \u201cpinned\u201d content to recommend related videos, movies, books, webpages and other related content\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The menu of content ranges from the obvious ebooks to videos and music, plus of course the full Internet capabilities baked into Android \u2013 as long as there\u2019s a wireless hotspot handy, as the Arc includes wifi but no option for 3G.<\/p>\n<p>Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours of continuous reading or video play and two weeks on standby.<\/p>\n<p>You can also load up the Arc with apps from the Google Play store.<\/p>\n<p>What about the more modest members of the new Kobo family?<\/p>\n<div id=\"ul2bfbc64763\" class=\"gallery-single\"><img title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ausbt.com.au\/photos\/view\/maxsize:467,240\/504e422d854441b8bac70cc3767f2254-kobo-mini-family-1500.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"&lt;div class=&quot;photo-text text&quot;&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\"><\/div>\n<p>With a $100 price tag and 5 inch screen, the\u00a0<strong>Kobo Mini<\/strong>\u00a0(above) hopes to be a near no-risk purchase that\u2019ll slip easily into your suit pocket or compact carry bag once it goes on sale next month.<\/p>\n<p>The 6\u201d front-lit screen on the $160\u00a0<strong>Kobo Glo<\/strong>\u00a0(below) offers soft, even and adjustable lighting so you can read books even in dim conditions, which is usually the end of the story for most ebook readers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ul10ba01770f\" class=\"gallery-single\"><img title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ausbt.com.au\/photos\/view\/maxsize:467,341\/504e424652b04fd890e10ca3767f2254-kobo-glo-family-front-1000.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"&lt;div class=&quot;photo-text text&quot;&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\"><\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s a hookup to the Kobo eBookstore through WiFi and you\u2019ll be able to choose from a\u00a0 pretty wild choice of colours when the Glo goes on sale next month.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest plus for all the Kobo ereaders is that work with the standard EPUB format \u2013 consider it the MP3 of ebooks \u2013 which is growing in popularity due to its support on the iPad and other tablets.<\/p>\n<p>Kindles, on the other hand, remain locked into Amazon\u2019s proprietary KZW format, which in turn restricts you to buying your ebooks through Amazon.com.<\/p>\n<p>For many business travellers that hardly rates as a deal-breaker, but there\u2019s always something to be said for the ability to shop around on an open market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Android eBook Readers on their way!
