What Makes the Earth a Unique Planet?

be located within the so-called habitable zone: i.e. be placed at the right distance from its home star, where liquid water can exist on the orbiting planet's surface.

The Right Distance From Its Star - To host life a planet must

For life, water in liquid form is essential. Due to its very unique properties, it is the indispensable solvent for all forms of life as we know them.

Liquid Water

The Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has oxygen in gaseous form. In its formative years, the Earth had an oxygen-free atmosphere, and it took several millions of years before oxygen was sufficient to keep organisms alive on our planet.

Different life forms on Earth inhabit different ecosystems and all ecosystems form the biosphere. The biosphere on Earth is divided into different biomes, and it is believed to have evolved over billions of years. On land, biomes are typically separated by humidity, height above sea level, and latitudes.

The Earth's Biosphere

Earth is the third planet in the solar system. Earth consists of air, water, land, and life. The land contains valleys, mountains, and flat areas. The air is made up of different gases, mainly oxygen and nitrogen. The water includes lakes, rivers, oceans, streams, rain, ice, and snow.

Earth Definition

The Earth’s outer core resembles a metal ball that is extremely heated. The metals inside are all liquid because it is so hot. Around 1800 miles below the crust’s surface, the outer core is around 1400 miles thick. It is made of metals like nickel and iron. The inner core is encircled by the outer core.

The abundance of Elements  Three chemical elements (oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen) make up about 93% of the human body mass. Yet overall there are at least 29 elements that are essential for the human body to function properly.

The abundance of Elements

By providing light and heat, solar energy is an indispensable ingredient for life. But for life to thrive, the planet-star relationship must be the perfect fit. If the sun was hotter, then the Earth would be uninhabitable. On the other hand, with less warm sun, there would be no liquid water on the Earth's surface, an indispensable prerequisite for life.
