1.  Attempt any four parts of the following :

(a) What is Biochemical Engineering? Give its scope and importance.

(b) What are the various transformation carried out by microorganisms. Describe briefly the various types of microorganisms studied under microbiology.

(c) Describe the structure and function of probangotic cells with the help of a diagram.

(d) What are the various physical parameters which affect microbial growth.

(e) Describe the components and functions of two biomolecules.

(f)  Define simple and complex lipids. Describe enzymatic hydrolysis of lipids.


2. Attempt any four of the following :       

(a) Describe the conversion of glucose with 3 phosphoglyceralalehyde in glycolysis.

(b) How glycogen, starch and sucrose enters glycolysis ?

(c) Describe the reactions for the formation of ATP molecules during glycolysis.

(d) How is enzyme activity affected by temperative and pH ?

(e) Define enzyme activity, specific activity and enzyme inhibition.

(f)  What are allosteric enzymes?


3. Attempt any two parts of the following :

(a) Describe the effect of substrate concentration on the rate of enzymatic reactions. How would you experimentally find the values of constants Vmax and Km-

(b) What are constitutive and inducible enzymes? Give examples.

(c) Describe the binetic classification of fermentation process with suitable examples and also describe them mathematically.


4.Attempt any two parts of the following :

(a) Describe the advantages of continuous sterilizations over batchs process and draw time-temperature profile for various types of continuous sterilizers.

(b) What is the importance of airation and agitation in fermentation industry ? Describe the various reactors encountered in the transfer of oxygen from gas phase to microbial cell.

(c) What do you understand by immobilized enzymes? Describe any one method in detail for immobilization of enzymes. What are its limitations?


5. Attempt any two parts of the following :

(a) What do you understand by continuous fermentation? Explain the terms wash out in a single stage continuous culture. Show that the maximum productivity is realized near wash out conditions.

(b) Describe the important measurement and control parameters for optimum operation of bioreaction and support your answer with neat diagram.

(c) What are the raw materials for production of ethanol by fermentation. Describe its manufacture from widely available raw material. How would you obtain absolute alcohol ?
