1. Attempt any two parts of the following :
(a) What are various principal pollutants polluting our environment?
(b) Which air pollutants are responsible for acid rain and ozone layer depletion. Discuss the possible chemical reactions involved in these two cases.
(c) What is the physical significance of BOD5? The dissolved oxygen in an unseeded sample of diluted water (waste) having an initial D.O. of 9.0 mg/L is measured to be 3.0 mg/L, after 5 days. The dilution factor is 0.030 and the reaction constant K’ is 0.23 day-1 :
(i) What is the 5 day BOD of the waste water?
(ii) What would be the ultimate carbonanceous BOD ?
2. Attempt any two parts of the following :
(a) What is the basic scheme through which complex organic pollutants get converted to methane?
(b) What is an aerobic digestion of organic pollutants? Explain its biochemistry and microbiology of the same.
(c) What are the various types of reactors, which are used for biogas production. Discuss them with sketches.
3. Attempt any two of the following :
(a) Describe the mechanism of pollutant degradation in a trickling filter unit. Which methodology is used to ensure smooth operation of trickling filter unit?
(b) What are various biological treatment methods currently in use for treatment of waste water ? Explain the differences in the treatment mechanisms of suspended cell and attached cell bioreactors.
(c) Discuss the basic principles of activated sludge process for waste water treatment. Draw a flow sheet and also discuss the design criteria for it.
4. Attempt any two of the following :
(a) What are the different approaches available for biological production of hydrogen. Discuss their mechanism.
(b) Write a note on bioconversion of agricultural residue for gainful utilization of it.
(c) Discuss action of cellulase on cellulose and its application.
5. Attempt any two of the following :
(a) Define bioremediation. Discuss the different process strategies for bioremediation through microbes.
(b) How the bioremediation help in the treatment of Xenobiotic compounds. Discuss them in brief.
(c) Write a note on commercial development of bioremediation industry.
