 1. Attempt any two of the following :

(a) What is mathematical modelling? Describe in detail how you will model a CSTR?

(b) Describe different types of ideal reactors and explain why they are called ideal reactors ?

(c) What is residence time distribution? Define E,C and F curves.

 

2. Attempt any two of the following:

(a) How do you broadly classify reactions? Write in detail the factors affecting the reaction rate.

(a) How do you interpret the batch reactor data to obtain the kinetics of a reaction? Explain integral method of analysis using first-order irreversible reaction as an Example.

(b) Write short notes on any two reactor types :

(i) Fluidized bed reactor

(ii) Plug Flow reactor

(iii) Airlift reactor

(c) Derive an expression for determination of second- order reaction kinetic constants using integral method of analysis.

 

4. Attempt any two of the following :

(a) How do a biochemical engineer transform laboratory scale data to be a plant scale? What are practical problems associated with it?

(b) Write in detail scale up method based on physical concept. How may the above concept be used in case of an agitated fermentor vessel?

(c) What is biomass wash-out with reference to a CSTR? Suggest the ways to avoid it.
