1. Attempt any four parts of the following :
(a) Explain the structure and function of various cell organelles of an eukaryotic cell.
(b) Name four reducing sugars (including both mono and disaccharides) and draw their structures.
(c) Describe how sucrose, lactose and glycogen are degraded before entering glycolytic cycle.
(d) Name the essential amino acids and draw the structures of a basic, an acidic and a sulphur containing amino acid.
(e) How are enzymes classified?
(f) Discuss two enzymes each of microbial and plant origin and the reactions catalyzed by them.
2. Answer any four parts of the following :
(a) What are the purine bases present in nucleic acids? Also discuss the role of ATP in biochemical reactions.
(b) Lipase enzyme can act reversibly – show the reactions catalyzed by lipase and justify its action in a reversible direction.
(c) Explain how the tertiary structure of a protein is important for its enzyme activity.
(d) What is an allosteric enzyme? Why is it important for regulation of cellular metabolism?
(e) How is enzyme activity affected by substrate concentration, temperature and pH?
(f) Discuss coenzymes, prosthetic groups and vitamins with examples.

(a) Discuss how glucose is converted to pyruvate and then to ethanol by glycolylic route?
(b) Write down the dehydrogeneration reactions of TCA cycle along with the production of ATP.
(c) Discuss :
(i) Pasteur effect
(ii) Enzyme inhibition.

(a) Outline the process of replication of DNA.
(b) Describe the structure of tRNA and its role in protein synthesis.
(c) How is a fatty acid molecule synthesised starting from acetyl coenzyme A?

(a) Describe the elongation and termination steps of protein synthesis in a prokaryote.
(b) What is the significance of pentose phosphate pathway (HMP)? Describe transketolase and transaldolase reactions.
