1. (a) What is the importance of dimensional analysis? 

(b) Outline the procedure for Rayleigh’s method and Buckingham method used

in dimension analysis. 

2. (a) Describe the process of Boundary layer formation, also describe the process of

Boundary layer separation. 

(b) Define the terms fully developed flow and transition length. 

3. (a) Show that for a laminar flow Newtonian fluid the friction factor is given by

16/NRe. 

(b) What is the physical significance of Hagen Poiseuille equation. 

4. The maximum velocity is measured as 3 m/s in a 0.1 m diameter tube. If the

fluid flowing has a density of 1260 kg/m3 and a viscosity of 0.9 Ns/m2 , determine

whether the flow is laminar or turbulent and determine the pressure gradient. 

5. In a single stage compressor:

Suction pressure : 101.3kN/m2

Suction temperature : 283 0k

Final pressure : 380kN/m2

If each new charge is heated 180k by contact with the clearance gases, calculate the

maximum temperature attained in the cylinder. 

6. What is terminal velocity. Derive the equation for terminal velocity under the

influence of centrifugal field. 

7. What is Pneumatic conveying. Explain. 

8. A pitot tube having a coefficient of 0.95 is inserted in the central line of a long pipe

of 250mm diameter in which crude oil of density 0.9 gm/cc and viscosity 16.3 cp

is flowing. Calculate the maximum velocity of the oil in the pipe if the differential

pressure in the manometer is 5cm of water.
