Note: (i) All questions are compulsory and carry equal marks.

(ii) Part (a) of each question is compulsory and attempt any two parts from (b), (c) & (d).

Q.1. (a) Hardness of the water is the property which prevents the lathering of soap. Write chemical   reaction  involved in it.

(b) Analysis of standard hard water from Kharoon river is as follows :

MgS04 = 3j30 mg/litre, CaCI2 = 555 mg/litre & MgCI2 = 190 mg/litre, 50 ml of this water

required  50 ml 6f    EDTA solution. Another sample of Mahanadi river water 50 ml required

40 ml of EDTA solution. This water after boiling required 20 ml of EDTA solution.

Calculate the temporary and permanent hardness of given sample of water in parts per

million. Write the formula for metal indicator complex OR Ca EDTA complex involved in. this reaction.

  (c) Boilers are the devices which are used to -0, generate steam in thermal power plants. What are the problems rises due to hardwater inside the boiler? Explain one problem in detail mentioning causes, effect and its prevention.

Zeolites are the cation exchange resins used to remove the hardness , of water sample. Explain the concept of the process. The hardness of 10,000 litres of sample watsr was removed by passing through a zeolite softner. The zeolite softner then required 100 litres of sodium chloride containing 100 grams/litre of NaCI for regeneration. Find the hardness of water sample in different units.

Q2 (a) What do you mean by calorific value of a fuel sample?

Arranging the following fuel sample in increasing Hivel of calorific value – Kerosene oil, H2 gas  & wood.

(b) Metallurgical coke is preferred than coal in industries. Write any three major quality of  coke. What do you mean by carbonization process ? Differentiate between LTC & HTC

(C )The percentage composition of a coal sample (by weight) was found to be as under :

7 C = 81%, H = 5%. S = 1%, N = 1% and rest in ash.

(i)Calculate minimum amount of 02 and air required for complete combustion of 1 kg of coal.

(ii)Determine the percentage composition by weight of dry products of combustion.

(d)(i) What do you mean by octane number and cetane number. What is its significance   to decide the quality of automobile fuels ?

(ii) Coal sample is analysed by proximate and ultimate analysis in laboratory. Explain any one with its significance.

Q 3. (a) One electrochemical cell is made up by A & B electrodes having E°RP value +1.36 V and -1,32 V respectively. What is the       E.M.F. of the cell ?

(b) What are electrochemical cells ? Explain fuel -cell with its advantages.

(c)What are the factors which effects the corrosion ? Explain wet mechanism of corrosion.

(d)What are the engineering methods to protect from corrosion Explain stress corrosion and waterline corrosion in detail.

0. 4. (a) Bakelite is one thermosetting polymer. What are its monomer units ? .

(b) Write all the chemical reactions involved in setting and hardening of cement.

(c )How lubricants can be classified? In case of high load and high speed of the machine

which type of lubrication is preferred ? Explain its mechanism.

(d) (i) Differentiate between thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers.

(ii) To enhance the quality of rubber, some extra compounds are mixed in rubber.

Write the mechanism of – this process.

Q. 5. (a) Calculate the oxygen balance of T.N.B.

(b) (i) Write the classification of propellant.

(ii) What are the characteristics of an explosive.

(c )Write flowchart for method of preparations properties and synthetic uses of melamine  Glycerine & Ethyl Alcohol (any 02)
