1. (a)What is the different between carbonate conditioning and phosphate conditioning ?

Attempt any two questions :

  (b)Explain with equation- and calculate the amount of lime and soda required for softening one million  liters of Water containing:

Free acid = 1.5 ppm ; HCO2= 396.5 ppm; Mg2+=42 ppm; Ca2+ = 90 ppm; FeS04.7H20 = 14 ppm. The purity of lime is 91% and          that of soda is 97.2%

(c)A zeolite softener was 90% exhausted by removing the hardness completely when 10,000 liters  of hard watei sample passed    through it. The exhausted zeolite bee required 200 liter of 3% sodium chloride for its complete regenerations. Calculate the hardness of water by zeolite process .

(d)What are the major boiler troubles caused by the use unsuitable water and what are their disadvantage ? How can they be   minimized ?


2. (a)Why a good fuel must have low ash content ?

Attempt any two questions :

(b)Explain with help of a diagram how the flue gas analysis is conducted using Roasts apparatus .

(c)A sample of coal contains C = 60% , H = 4% 02 = 6% , N2 = 2% ash = 28% . Calculate the % age composition of the dry products of    combustion , assuming that 40% excess air is used.

(d)What is the significance of ultimate analysis ? Also calculate the percentage of sapphire in  the given . 1.0 g of a coal sample which was used in a bomb calorimeter for the determination of calorific value. Calorific value of coal was found to be 8,800 cal/g. The ash formed in a bomb calorimeter was extracted with acid and the acid extract was heated with barium  nitrate solution and a precipitate was filtered, dried and weighed . The weight of precipitate  was found to be 0.08g.


3. (a)Explain why pitting corrosion is a dangerous type of corrosion ?

(c) Discuss the following protective measures against corrosion : (any two)

(i)Proper design and material selection

(ii)Catholic protection

(iii)use of inhibitors and modification of environment

(d) Discuss the principle and advantage of fuel cell and explain the construction and working

of hydrogen – oxygen fuel cell with diagram.


4.(a) State the factors which governs the between the wet and dry process of manufacturing of Portland Cement.

(b)What are the microscopic constituents of Portland Cement ? How they are formed and

discuss their contribution towards the properties of the cement ?

(c)what do you understand by the term Lubrication ? Explain mechanism of fluid film lubrication

with suitable example diagram.

(d)Write the preparation, properties and uses of Nylon PVC.
