  UNIT-I

Note : Solve all the five questions . AH questions carry equal marks

Q1   Solve any four parts :

(a) Calculate hardness of 0.01 m solution of MgCI2 in ppm.

(b) Use the following experimental observations to determine the type and amount of

alkalinity  in mg/1 of alkalin  water sample.

(a) Water used for titration  50ml

(b) Phenolphthalein end point  20ml

(c ) Methyl orange and point  40ml

(d)Acid used for titration  N/50

Q2   (a) Why , even dissolved in traces MgCI2 is dangerous for boilers

(b)What do you mean by internal treatment?

(c)Calculate the amount of lime (84%pure) and soda (92%) pure) required for

Treatment of 20,000 liters of water . Which when analyzed gave following results.

Ca(HC03)2= ppm, Mg(HC03)2=36.3 ppm

MgS04= 30.33ppm, CaS04= 34.00 ppm,

CaCl2= 27.75ppm and NaCl= ppm. Molecular

Mass of above salts are – 162 , 146, 120, 136, 111 and 58.5 respectively

high pressure boilers ?

(c) Write a short note on any one of the following:

Q6   (a) 0.72 gram of a fuel containing 80% carbon when burnt in a bomb calorimeter, increased

the temperature of water from 27.3°C to29.1°C . If calorimeter contains 250gms of water

and its water equivalent is 150 gms calculate the HCV of the fuel . Give your answer in kJ/kg.

(b) Give an account of recovery of by — products of Otto Hoffman ‘s oven.
