5.Distinguish between the term polymer and plastics.

6.Define the term ceramics.  Give two examples.

7.Calculate the critical radius ratio for six fold coordination in ionic ceramics.

8.What are the characteristics required for ceramics used in nuclear applications?

9.List any two ceramic components made by (i) hot pressing and (ii) hot isostatic pressing.

13. a) (i) What is glass transition temperature in polymers?  Explain.

What are the factors that influence glass transition temperature?        (8)


(ii) Discuss the creep and stress relaxation phenomena in polymers

with examples.                                                                                                (8)

(ii)  Discuss the various criteria to be considered in the selection of

14.a) (i) Discuss briefly the following structures with neat sketches

(i) CsCl  (ii) Flourite       (iii) alumina                                                         (8)


(ii)   Calculate the coordination number and density of magnesia

from the following data :

radius of magnesium ion = 0.66 Ao

radius of oxygenion  = 1.32 Ao

the atomic weights are 24.3 g/g mole and 16 g/g mole for

magnesium and oxygen respectively.

15. a) (i) Explain how slip casting of ceramics is done. What are the

parameters that affect slip casting process?                                              (8)


(ii) Discuss Pilkington process for float glass manufacture?                      (8)
