Preface Life in modern world is unthinkable without the use of electronics. Mobile phones, TVs, household gadgets, automobiles, medical equipment are just some areas where electronics plays the most important role. Basic Electronics is a fundamental course which every engineering student is expected to undergo in the first year of the undergraduate programme. At this level, the student only requires a fundamental knowledge of the basic devices such as diode, transistor, SCR and MOSFET their characteristics and application to simple measuring systems, communication systems, amplifiers, oscillators, etc. Digital electronics has replaced analog electronics in most applications. Hence, an exposure to the concepts of digital electronics is vital for any engineering student. The book has 7 chapters. The first chapter takes up the topic of diode, which is one of the earliest semiconductor devices. To this day, it is an important device used widely in many applications. This chapter presents the working of intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, the diode behaviour under forward and reverse bias, the application of diode as a half-wave and full-wave rectifier, clipper, clamper and filter circuits. The chapter contains over 50 worked examples. Chapter 2 deals with the construction and working of npn and pnp transistors. The characteristics of common base, common emitter and common collector configurations, along with their applications are also discussed. The applications of transistors in amplifiers and oscillators are also presented in a simple manner. Operational amplifiers are used in a host of applications and are one of the most widely used IC chips. Chapter 3 deals with operational amplifier construction and characteristics, for both ideal and practical devices. The applications of operational amplifiers such as summer, differentiator, amplifier, integrator, voltage follower and subtractor are presented with a number of numerical examples. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with binary number system and simple digital circuits. In chapter 4, the binary system, hexadecimal system and octal system are presented along with the methods to convert from one number system to another. Over 50 problems are solved to understand the conversion process and the number system. Chapter 5 presents digital circuits. The chapter begins with discussion on basic gates, Boolean functions and universal gates. Implementation of Boolean functions with different universal gates are also presented. Simplification of Boolean
viii Preface functions using theorems and postulates, as well as using K-maps are presented. Half adder, full adder, subtractor, multiplexer, encoder, decoder and demultiplexer circuits are also presented. The last section of the chapter discusses the most common microcontroller the 8051 and the microprocessor 8085, along with their block diagrams and pin diagrams. Over 50 problems are solved in this chapter. Chapter 6 deals with transducers which are an integral part of measuring systems. Chapter 7 presents the fundamental concepts of analog communication. This includes the concepts of amplitude modulation, frequency modulation and phase modulation. A detailed comparison of the different modulation techniques are also discussed.
