About this eBook

PREFACE O ur basic aim in com piling this textbook is to provide relevant inform ation in a sim ple and practical style to the veterinary science students and practising veterinarians o f the developing countries. T here is now an increasing aw areness about the im portance o f radiology as a diagnostic aid even in rum inant practice. M any states o f India have started equipping their field veterinary hospitals, especially polyclinics, with m odem X -ray m achines. Thus veterinary radiology is no more lim ited to the four w alls o f the teaching institutes. In order to establish a radiology unit and to obtain quality radiographs, it is essential that basic principles are w ell understood. T here arc several excellent books on radiological physics and basic principles but are exhaustive as well as expensive. M ost o f these books are designed to m eet the requirem ents o f m edical radiology. T herefore, there was a need to project concise inform ation which is easy to com prehend and is available in an econom ical edition. M oreover, radiographic positioning protocols for rum inants have not been described in available books of veterinary radiology. This book is made with these objectives in view . C ontributors o f this book, though experienced teachers and clinicians, had no formal training in radiological physics and so errors are inevitable. W e do not claim any originality as far as basic principles are concerned since a variety o f literature was consulted to com pile the inform ation. H ow ever, every attem pt has been m ade to present the inform ation in a sim ple w ay so that m atter does not appear to be difficult to understand by an average undergraduate student. A num ber o f illustrations and photographs have been included to make the text m eaningful. M ajor m aterial included in contrast techniques and radiographic positioning is original and produced w ithin the scope o f radiographic facilities available. A ny material used with perm ission o f various sources has been specified under the figures. W e hope that inform ation provided in this book would enable the students and clinicians to gain a w orking know ledge of the basic principles of radiology, to establish a radiology unit and to obtain a quality radiograph. W e also hope that inform ation provided will be useful to radiographers w orking in veterinary radiological services who are usually trained in m edical institutes in the absence o f separate anim al health technicians training program m es in most third world countries. Considering that com puters are fast entering day to day life and that these play an im portant role in a radiology section, a chapter on com puters and radiology, incorporating basic inform ation, has also been included. T echniques of alternate imaging described in chapter 9 are hardly used at this stage, except for fluoroscopy, in veterinary practice in developing countries. H ow ever, a veterinarian can not justify his training if he is not aware o f even basic principles o f such techniques which w ill certainly be used in practice in near future. W e also hope that inform ation contained in this book would help in im plem enting a uniform syllabus in veterinary radiology teaching across the country for which Veterinary C ouncil o f India is em phasising. W herever appropriate, selected questions have been listed at the end o f chapters to help a clinician in testing his acquired know ledge and a student in preparing for an exam ination. It was not easy for us to com pile this book as we had no finances at our disposal and there w ere m any additional constraints. W e do hope that the readers will understand our lim itations. D uplication o f m aterial w as inevitable al a few places in order to maintain clarity in the text. W e request the readers to send us their valuable suggestions for im proving the book in future. ACKNOW LEDGEM ENTS It w as not easy for us to com pile this book on basic principles o f radiology and radiographic positioning. There w ere tim es when we w ere not even sure o f its reality. N evertheless task could be com pleted because o f continued support o f many persons. W e thank them all from o u r heart. W e are grateful to various publishers of standard works and editors o f journals who allow ed reproduction o f illustrations and photographs. Publishers are W .B. Saunders C o, Philadelphia
