About this eBook

PREFACE We have ventured to write this textbook with the hope o f providing useful inform ation to veterinarians engaged in surgery o f dom esticated rum inants. A lthough w ritten prim arily for students and veterinarians o f developing countries yet veterinarians o f other countries can use it as a reference source. The nature o f clinical practice in m ost A sian countries differs from that o f other countries. A part from cattle, sheep and goats the w ater buffalo and cam el are other livestock species encountered in day to day practice o f veterinarians. T he aim o f this book is to provide inform ation relevant to these species. W ith the overall advances in anim al sciences, veterinary surgery has not rem ained m erely an application o f scalpel. Physiological im plications influence the skill and clinical endeavours o f a surgeon. A lot of d ifferences exist in the physiology o f m onogastric anim als and rum inants. In order to provide an effective treatm ent, a surgeon m ust understand the pathophysiological changes that may be involved. Students and veterinariaas o f developing countries fail to acquire books on various subjects required for an integrated know ledge and surgery o f rum inants. Hence inform ation on body fluids and fluid therapy, antim icrobial therapy, physiotherapy, electrocardiography, neoplasm s and diagnostic radiology has also been included in this book. A natom ical considerations have been included, w herever necessary. A num ber o f illustrations and pho tographs have been incorporated to make the text more meaningful. Illustrations are the handiw ork o f professional colleagues and undergraduate students. Since the photographs were collected from various sources, som e o f these may not be o f good quality. The text is based on the inform ation available in the accessible literature and experience o f the contributors and editors. R eferences are listed at the end o f each section or chapter. It w as not easy to trace the trend or incidence o f the surgical diseases o f the cam el because o f lack o f reports from field veterinarians. M ost reports in the literature originate from teaching institutes where only a sm all population o f cam els is able to reach for treatm ent. T herefore, apart from screening the data available in the literature and at Haryana A gricultural U niversity, one o f us Jit Singh travelled through a great stretch o f cam el belt o f R ajasthan India to gather inform ation from cam el-m en and field veterinarians. The inform ation gathered has been distributed to various chapters. W ith nearly 40 contributors solicited from various regions of India Dr. A rnold w as kind enough to respond from the U .S.A . , it has not been an easy task to com pile the text and to incorporate support m aterial, specially as a first attem pt. We are conscious o f our lim itations and chances do exist for a num ber o f errors and om issions. Yet efforts w ere made to avoid duplications and to m aintain clarity. To revise the book in the future and to m ake it more useful, a feedback by the readers is very important. We solicit the readers to address their valuable suggestions to Jit Singh.
