PREFACE
Biotechnology in a broad sense means the use and manipulation of living organisms to derive useful products for the welfare of human beings. As a matter of fact, biotechnology, which appears to be a new science, has its roots at the dawn of civilization, when neolithic farmers, unintentionally selected the crop plants producing higher number of seeds plant and for other useful agronomic traits. Biotechnology has been quite helpful in keeping pace with the demands of ever increasing human population and in improving the quality of human life. Major biotechnological achievements associated with human welfare have been from fields like plant and animal tissue culture and microbial biotransformation. Genetic engineering has made possible the successful cloning of many important genes into bacteria. The synthesis of monoclonal antibodies has made the diagnosis of many diseases very easy and accurate. Another major outcome of biotechnology is molecular farming which involves the production of specific products like starches, oils, plastics and drugs enzymes on a large scale through transformation using foreign genes. Improvement in post harvest qualities in plants, including delaying the ripening process to increase the shelf life of many fruits and vegetables, has been accomplished. Finally, transgenic plants and animals are now being produced which express the desired foreign genes for resistance to insects, various kinds of stresses and fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens in plants and for improving traits like wool quality and milk production in animals. Although the prospects of genetic engineering and biotechnology are becoming brighter day-by-day, these developments raise certain ethical issues too, especially in the context of whether the genetically engineered products would be safe for human consumption. The present book provides an authoritative review account of many aspects of current interest and progress in the field of Biotechnology that has been made in the recent past. This volume contains 23 chapters, prepared by specialist and subject expert on different aspects of biotechnology. Each topic has been written in a clear and explanatory style, combined with an extensive cross referencing system by eminent biotechnologist and subject expert. This is high time for Indian scientist to merge the biotechnological operations into a national development, building hardcore economics and seeking strategies for international cooperation and ties. I am grateful to all learned contributors for their cooperation in compiling useful information on various facets of biotechnology. I am sure, detailed account on a wide variety of subjects will be of great help to researchers and teachers of biotechnology and for planning future strategies for development in India.
