PREFACE
I am delighted to release the first edition of my book on Biochemistry. The major goal of this book is to provide life science students the basics of biochemistry in very simple and interesting manner. I have tried to add all the new upcomings of the field. The book is divided into 27 chapters to make the content clear and understandable. Since I am in this field for more than two decades, I tried my best to put all teaching inputs and make this book versatile for Biochemistry course in any College or University. Organization of the text The book contains 27 chapters. To make it more explanatory, the whole content is divided into three sections. Section 1 The Molecular Concept of Life This section contains Chapters 1-11 where the cell, its structure and various biomolecules are discussed. In Chapters 1 and 2, cell is discussed, followed by the energetic part of cell. Chapters 4 and 5 contain carbohydrates and lipids, the energy giving biomolecules. In Chapters 6, 7 and 8, amino acids, proteins and their conformation is discussed which is followed by two chapters on enzymes. The last Chapter 11 contains one of the important genetic biomolecule nucleic acid. Section 2 Biosynthesis and Breakdown of Biomolecules This section encloses Chapters 12 to 22. First, what is metabolism is discussed, then Chapters 13, 14 and 15 are linked with energy metabolismcarbohydrate metabolism and photosynthesis. Chapters 16 and 17 are linked with lipid metabolism. Chapters 18 and 19 cover amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism. The next two chapters are on animal and plant hormones. The last chapter in this section contains vitamins. Section 3 Transfer of Genetic Information This section contains content related to genetic material. In Chapter 23, it is discussed how replication takes place in opposite strands of DNA. Then how DNA is manipulated for humankind. Chapters 25 and 26 contain how transcription takes place converting to protein synthesis. Last chapter consists of how gene expression can be controlled in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. At the end, there is a Glossary to find out word meaning. In the end of each chapter, there is a summary to understand the subject in short, followed by questions and references. Matter is covered in easy way and is explained with the help of comprehensive diagrams. Seema Pavgi Upadhye
