PREFACE
Seed represents both the product of grain-crop production and the beginning of the next life cycle of the crop. A seed contains, in a fairly small package, a tiny plant with embryonic roots, stem, and leaves a food supply that provides energy, fats, and proteins needed to support the growth of the seedling during germination and a seed coat to help protect the contents from insects, diseases, and mechanical injury. Seed Technology is an interdisciplinary science and includes a broad range of subjects like seed production, handing, processing storage, testing, certification, quality control marketing and distribution. It also includes in research in seed development and maturation, seed physiology, seed dormancy and germination, seed viability and longevity, seed pathology and entomology, seed enhancement based on modern botanical and agricultural sciences and somatic embryo genesis and synseed production. Seed technology provides carrier of new technology with basic tool for secured food supply. Currently the Indian seed industry is the eighth largest in the world with an estimated value of INR 49 billion USD 1.06 Billion and with an annual growth rate of 12 to 13 . The industry has shown a buoyant growth over the last two years on well supportive monsoons. The development of private seed industry is no more confined to just production and marketing of seed, but has well acquired technological strength to cater to the varietal needs of tomorrow. Along with industries Indian farmers have in recent years adopted intensive cultivation practices in order to meet the growing demand for agricultural produce. Seed marketing is aimed to fulfill the requirements of the farmer's demand for reliable supply of a range of improved seed varieties of assured quality at an acceptable price. There are several problems in
organizing effective seed delivery systems, especially to small-scale farmers. They need firm confirmation and validity of the seed industry who are promoting their seed products.
