Preface
Forests contribute m ultiple ecological benefits. They prevent erosion by reducing the rain fall's force on the soil's surface and by absorbing w ater and not allow ing it to directly run off and rem ove topsoil. Forests act as w ater filters, collecting and storing w ater and recharging underground aquifers. Forests also increase the atm osphere's h um idity by transpiration, which affects tem peratu re and rain fall. On the top of large scale depletion of such resources, of late, the concept of Joint Forest M anagem ent has been introduced to protect the forest resources and the livelihood reqirem ents of the forest fringe households. This book is a fine collection of case studies which critically exam ines the depletion of forest resources and its concequances on the livelihood issues of the tribals. It also covers the problem s relating to the implementation of Joint Forest Management. Social forestry as a part of the overall forest resources of the country are also evaluated in the context of their efficacy to tackle the problem s of day to day real life of the com m on man. Besides, the im portance of m angrove forestry as a safe cushion for cyclone catastrophes in the coastal areas is also analysed. EDITORS
