PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION
I was overwhelmed by the personal compliments showered on me by the groups of Weed Scientists gathered from all over India at the Biennial Conference of Indian Society of Weed Science held in February, 2010 at Raipur Chattisgarh where I was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. The reason for these greetings was common with all the participating scientists ie my book entitled Modern Weed Management. Most of the scientists being much younger to me, had never seen me face to face, but knew my positive part through this title. I learnt about such a wide acceptance of my book by different Agricultural Universities in the country only at the Raipur gathering. Many scientists were curious to know if I was further updating the third edition of this book. Although I had already taken- up this work, the real impetus to this assignment was provided by the face-depicted excitement of these young scientists. So now this fourth edition of Modern Weed Management is in your hands, comprising latest knowledge on the subject for the benefit of students and researchers alike. Thanks to all those I met at Raipur. Weed Science is a very fast advancing subject. I am sure the future scientists shall keep the torch of dissemination of knowledge lighted, even when I am unable to update it any further.

PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION
Weed science is perhaps one agricultural science that is making advances by leaps and bounds both in terms of identification of the new problems and inventing their new solutions. Weed species are not only changing their dominance patterns worldwide, but these are also bringing forth several new herbicide resistant races. New alien weeds are invading our land and water time and again, and, thus, disturbing the native biodiversity of the region under attack. Herbicides developed to tackle such ever growing weed problems are posing concerns about their possible residues in our food and water. Hundreds of research papers are being published every year round the world to resolve these and many more weed management related problems in order to ensure sustainable agriculture and food security. Keeping all such aspects of the progress of weed science in view, the author strongly felt need to religiously update and enlarge the previous edition of Modern Weed Management, which is now in your hands. A unique feature of the progress of weed science research is that the past findings never become inapposite or behind the times, bar a very few basic physiological elements of the herbicide behaviour. The fast accumulating new research information actually advances the past valuable findings, without acting as replacements to these. Consequently, in the present edition of the book while the past findings of even 1966 have been retained, there is a thematic updating of the chapters with the current most research results reported up to the year 2007. Further, the completely new topics created in the subject have been discussed in the book by supplementing it with two new chapters. The intense updating of the old chapters and addition of the new ones collectively reflect the exciting developments in weed science in this third edition of Modern Weed Management. I hope the readers shall enjoy reading it as much as I did working on it for them. Suggestions are welcome from the readers for their possible use in future editions of the book.
