PREFACE
When I started teaching a course on Rice-Production Technology at Birsa Agricultural University in 1981, I soon realised that there was a vast number of literatures on rice emanating from rice research which remained scattered and needed compilation for the benefit of students and research workers. Dr. I. C. Mahapatra, a renowned agronomist and rice scientist, soon joined us a Vice-Chancellor of the University. He expressed his desire to teach this course as one of the instructors along with me. He carefully reviewed the course contents and offered many helpful suggestions. He too felt a need for writing a book which may explain how rice crop can be managed scientifically to achieve more yields under diverse situations in the light of emerging knowledge out of research. I started working on it but, somehow, could not compete it due to my pressing engagements and other assignments. I wish to express my deep appreciation for the privileged of being closely associated professionally during the last quarter of century with Dr. Mahapatra. His inspiration and leadership have been deeply appreciated by those of us who have been fortunate enough to work with him. This gratitude should be expressed now while he is still dynamically active in his endeavours to improve agriculture, particularly rice crop science. After my superannuation from university service when I got an opportunity to meet him at his home town after a lapse of many years, he reminded me and emphasised the need of a book on rice production incorporating recent advances. He also gave his consent to join this treatise as one of the authors. The objective of this venture is to assemble and summerise pertinent information on rice, though it is almost impossible to incorporate all significant development in recent years in a single book. The subject matter discussed in this book with emphasis on Indian subcontinent is based primarily on available literatures, research papers, many books of interdisciplinary nature and experience of authors as rice agronomists. The authors are indebted to those, whose works have been quoted and reproduced with due acknowledgements. Though it is not always possible to seek
permission, we appreciate their contribution which helped make this book possible.
