A garden should provide enjoyment, relaxation, recreation, clean environment and education. Plants is nature s greatest gift to man. It gives our landscape beauty provides man, animal and bird with shade, shelter and food stems destructive erosion and above all gives us oxygen. By day trees work hard absorbing carbon-dioxide and water the by-product is oxygen, which in the air is essential for life. In a garden, space provided for lawn, path, herbaceous border, shrubbery border, trees, summer house, green house, cactus, fountain, pond, statue and other garden objects-should be a right proportion. One of the most important considerations in the world today is increasing the production of flowering crops and ornamental plants. It is a major and often neglected step toward offering a greater volume between landscape gardening and environment. Flowers and indoor plants play an important role in human life. Recent developments in horticulture have contributed significantly to plant the landscape gardening and to establish floriculture industry. Similarly remarkable improvements have been made in controlling air pollution. The book has been written in lucid language with figures, diagrams and photographs, where necessary, to cater the needs of the horticultural and agricultural students studying under-graduate and postgraduate courses on floriculture and landscape gardening throughout the world. I hope this publication will be useful to students and nursery man, flowers and ornamental plants growers, house wives and also plants loving peoples in both developed and developing countries.
Last but not the least, is the aesthetic value of the plants. The beautiful green crown of the foliage is soothing to the eye. The colourful flowers apply a healing touch to the disturbed and weary mind. The flower and foliage beautify the surroundings and thus infuse health in our body and mind by their cheerful effect. A charming atmosphere elevates the human soul above the daily drudgeries of this world and guides it towards the pleasant unknown. I am highly grateful to Professor V. K.
