Preface Advancement of biotechnology and related knowledge will provide the basis for some of the global problems of food security, agricultural productivity and environmental management for the sustainable livelihood of future generation. It has been realized in the past few decades that biotechnology applications can play a vital role in supplying the demands of our ever-expanding world population through biotechnology based potential agricultural productivity keeping the relevance of environmental management. The Specific Programme Cooperation of the Seventh Framework Programme of European Commission on RTD FP7 includes the theme 'Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology' FAFB as a priority area of research, development and technology transfer with the major emphasis on addressing the needs of 1 sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forests and aquatic environments, 2 fork to farm food including sea food , health and well-being, and 3 life sciences, biotechnology and biochemistry for sustainable non-food products and processes. Though the biotechnological potential for creating functional foods with enhanced health benefits, increasing crop productivity and sustainable environmental management were tantalizing, there is also widespread public debate about the feasibility and of environmental risks associated with such technologies. The present book has a special focus on developing and demonstrating biotechnology applications for food, agriculture and environment, such as of biotechnological applications of extreme microorganisms cloning and characterization of genes involved in oosporein biosynthesis and plant disease resistance molecular detection of bacteria in water and wastewater role of pectinase and cellulase on mycoherbicidal activity of Fusarium arthrosporioides on Orobanche aegyptiaca Spirulina platensis cultivation for food and feed use bioconversion of agricultural wastes by edible fungi integrated farming-food production-based biological control perspectives of Bacillus thuringiensis genetic variability analysis of fruit crops banana and
other multipurpose species Jerusalem artichoke cultivars based on biochemical and molecular approaches phytochemical, pharmacological and tissue culture studies on threatened medicinal plants and finally the impact of plant genetic resources on sustainable regional development.
