PREFACE India has. to take the challenges ahead to beat the stagnation in growth in agriculture since the decade of nineties experienced with slow growth. Although the country has achieved self sufficiency in food grain production, the decade of nineties has shown a slow growth in food grain production. There is an inadequate policy initiatives in agricultural sector after liberalisation or globalisa tion. Monocroppring, environmental problems due to excess use of irrigation water and less use of fertilizers in rainfed areas are responsible for arresting the growth in agricultural production. To make the agriculture sector vibrant once again, there is an urgent need to commercialise Indian agriculture. The need of the hour is to accept agriculture as business enterprise and diversiefy the agriculture. Management initiatives are utmost required in changing cropping pattern, rainfed farming, efficiency of fertiliser use with organic farming, better water management and alternate or diversified agriculture like livestock farming, dairying, sheep or goat farming, poultry, duckery, piggery, aquaculture or fishery, forage production and other income generating agriculture with some non-agricultural programmes. This book entitled Diversification in Agriculture has got tremendous impact on the socio-economic impact and upliftment of the resource-poor farming communities as well as generating income for the ultimate benefits of the farmers. The author has been prompted to write this book as a practical reference document and has tried to focus various factors of diversification in Agriculture with resource management and conservation under WTO regime.
