Preface
Watershed management is an approach of area planning of natural resources, specially, land, water and plants for the socio-economic need of human society and community concerned. It provides a systematic way for integrated development in any given area. It involve the exploration and development of the complex interrelationship between the resources of watershed and the people of the area. Watershed management has to be sustainable on ecosystem principals, when the treated watershed would permit maximum possible stability through the process of production, consumption and regeneration. Conservation programmes for natural resources to subsurve primary production on the basis of watershed is being implemented throughout the country. Although watershed has been in existence since long time, it became popular in eighties when large number of model watersheds under the aegis of National Watershed Programme were launched in the country. Compared to earlier programmes, the development of arable and non-arable areas were integrated. Encouraged with the success of model watersheds, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India in 1987-88 launched National Watershed Development Programme for rainfed Areas NWDPRA . Since then a massive national watershed programmes to improve and stabilize the agricultural production system for rainfed areas have been taken up in different ago-ecological zones. A total area of 9 m ha has been treated through watershed management programme implementation. In the fragile Indian hot arid ecosystem the degradation of environment is basically attributed to low and erratic rainfall, hostile climatic condition and increasing biotic pressure in the absence of adequate investment and appropriate management practices to
augment and conserve the natural resources. Population growth and poverty on the hand and pressure of rising demand from affluence on the other, have been exerting powerful pressure on ecosystem. Therefore, careful implementation of resource management technology on watershed basis is essential for the stablisation of primary production system for the sustenance of local population. To achieve this objective there is need to have proper documentation of technological innovation made by the scientific community. This book Watershed Management of Sustainable Agriculture has been prepared to serve as a book of reference for researches, administrators, planners, policy makers and field workers. I am indebted to Dr. J.S. Samra, Deputy Director General Natural Resources Management , Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi for inspiring me to bring out this book.
