About this eBook

Preface In order to achieve food security for all, it would be imperative to enhance crop production as well as crop and live stock productivity in a sustainable manner, especially in developing countries. Climate change, especially global warming and green house gas emission, are now serious concerns for agricultural production and production environment. Improved technologies for production of biomass-energy are needed to cope with the emerging threats of dwindling earth oil sources. This would necessitate identifying fast growing plants adapted to tropical as well as temperate environs, and an efficient bio-fuel production technology. So research and development efforts are needed for natural resource management for food and biomass energy as well to ensure adequate agri-based employment and livelihood opportunities for poverty alleviation- all coherent elements of sustainability. Globalization of economies and liberalization of trade, in the face of inequities for resources among different countries, knowledge deficiencies, inadequate social infrastructure, call for international dialogue and joint efforts for sustainable development, especially in Africa and Asia. To compliment the above objectives and activities, The African Asian Studies Promotion Association AASF and The International Foundation for Sustainable Development in Africa and Asia IFSDAA , Mahatama Gandhi House, Goettingen, Germany organized an Ist IFSDAA International Seminar on Sustainable Development for Food, Biomass Energy and Livelihood Security from November 18-20, 2007. This book entitled Resource Management Towards Sustainable Agriculture and Development is based on the papers presented and or intended to be presented by senior and young researchers from different countries. Major purpose of this publication is to highlight the current scenario and future needs of research and development towards food, feed, bioenergy, rhizosphere, plant nutrition and soil health, genetic resources, sustainable development and socio-economic aspects like livelihood and empowerment. The editor expresses sincere gratitude to the authors contributing papers on wide range of topics and to Prof. Brigitta Benzing, President AASF Vice President, IFSDAA, Dr. K. W. Giorgis, Executive Secretary, IFSDAA, Dr. A. Wais, Convener, Dr. Ines Fornell, Dr. A. R. Asif, and Mr. Sujit Chowdhury for their continuous support in organizing International Seminar. Also, thanks are due to Mr. Andreas Bigalke, Mr. Ramin Wais, Mrs. Heide Dosselmarie,
Mrs. Hoffman and others associated with AASF directly or indirectly who contributed their best for the grand success of the International Seminar. Hope that this publication will be useful for researchers, development functionaries and policy planners engaged in various agricultural and development pursuits.. Prof. R. K. Behl Editor
