Preface
Industrial Biotechnology covers a wide range of subjects which include fermentation technology. Industries involving fermentation processes are maintaining a steady and strong growth but require rigid standards in quality control. In India we have a reasonable but not a proportionate share of the gains from the development of these industries. In order to sustain a momentum growth in this area, we need manpower that is interested and motivated to work in areas like fermentation technology in biotech industries. Being a laboratory oriented subject, the fermentation technology, we need good practice in order to achieve excellence. To achieve the higher levels of research and development in the subject we need the development of basic skills and understanding of bio-protocols. The present book is designed to introduce the fermentation technology methods and protocols on the screening of industrially important microbes and production of various industrially important compounds, enzymes, antibiotics, vitamins, etc. by these microorganisms. The manual is also intended to provide assay protocols for the various industrially important microbial products. Each laboratory exercise contains an introductory unit, easy to follow instructions for various media and reagent preparation and procedure for screening of industrially important microbes, production and assay of various fermentation products. It is our sincere belief that this laboratory manual will have a definite possibility to contribute practical knowledge in the area of industrial biotechnology especially in the area of fermentation technology for teachers, researchers, students and technicians in colleges.
