PREFACE Maize is one of the most important cereals of the world. However, the historical records regarding the cultivation of maize in India date back only to the Maratha Empire, In India it ranks 5th in area, 4th in production and 3rd in productivity
The production has
increased from 3.9 million t to 12.6 million t in the period 1950-2003. But the productivity of 1.7 t ha is still way behind compared to other developed countries. In India 55 of the grain produced currently is used for food purposes, about 14 for live stock and feed, 19 for poultry feed, 19 for starch industry and 1.5 for seed. Maize is more widely distributed over the Indian subcontinent than any other cereal is which means that it has an exceptionally wide adaptability. It can be grown as kharif as well as rabi crop, but is largely taken as a kharif crop. The average maize yield in India is 25 of that in the USA.
